Skiing Yellowstone
Glide through stunning solitude ... between bliss and bison breath
November/December 2008

When it snows in the Yellowstone backcountry, says veteran Sierra Club Outings leader Rob White, "the flakes are so big, coming down so heavy, the snow makes a sort of hushing sound as it lands on evergreen needles and piles on the ground."

Snow aficionados on the Sierra Club Yellowstone trip slept in comfortable national park lodges, then ventured deep into the wilds, where they were entertained by goofball otters, solemn bison, yipping coyotes, bighorn sheep, a pair of mating wolves, and passionate conversations exchanged in steamy bursts.

Where to Go: The National Park Service offers several options for cross-country ski trips in Yellowstone. Sierra is partial to the Sierra Club Outings trip described here (and at sierraclub.org/outings/national/brochure/09422a.asp), which includes the guidance of skilled trip leaders and naturalists. The $2,695 cost for the next trip (February 14–21, 2009) includes seven nights' lodging and some meals and transportation. Previous ski experience required.
