Can You Guess What This Enormous School of Rays is Doing?

Recently, an enormous shoal of Mobula rays appeared en masse off the coast of Baja. That stretch of sea is the normal stomping (flapping?) ground for the rays, but rarely has a group this large ever been witnessed, much less filmed. What’s more is that the rays put on an aerial show normally reserved for fighter pilots and raptor birds.

While science has known about this behavior for quite some time, we are no closer to knowing exactly why these rays breach. The video raises several other questions: Why did they coalesce and disperse so quickly? Why such an enormous school? Why here? Why now?

So, what do you think? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section. Here’s hoping we can crack the case in the near future.
