When John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt hiked into the Yosemite Valley together in 1903, they shared a first-hand interest in protecting America's wild places. Muir was a hiker who wanted to wander mountains and valleys that were free of industrial development. Roosevelt was a hunter who wanted to explore dense forests and open fields. They were natural allies.
They could not have known the challenges that would face that land and many others in the years to come. But they were men of vision who understood the value of America's wild legacy.
On that day more than a century ago, Muir and Roosevelt began to forge the conservation efforts that make it possible today for us to camp in a quiet meadow, hunt an unspoiled marsh, or fish a sparkling trout stream. But America has grown tremendously since their time. As our land and water is increasingly threatened by development and pollution, so is our access to quality hunting and fishing.
The Sierra Club is working on many fronts to protect our outdoor heritage from these threats. We're fighting for streams that are free of mercury and other toxic pollution. We're safeguarding our country's last remaining wilderness areas. We're cutting global warming pollution and protecting wetlands. And we're investing in the future by actively helping get more of our kids away from television and video games and into the outdoors for camping, fishing and hunting trips.
Most importantly, we're honoring the vision of John Muir and Theodore Roosevelt by protecting the landscape that has helped nurture the American spirit for centuries.
