Sierra Clubbers hike the Coastal Trail from San Francisco's Cliff House to the Golden Gate Bridge.
|
by Larry Junck, M.D.
We came from Massachusetts, Georgia, Michigan, Iowa, Arizona, and California. The first part of our hike, like most Sierra Club outings, was an experience of nature: Rocky cliffs. The Pacific Ocean, complete with gray mist, swells, dorsal fins, and shipwrecks. Cypress trees, poppies, poison oak, and eucalyptus. We ate lunch in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge. The latter part of our hike was an experience of the city: Armaments dating to the Spanish-American War. The Barbary Coast trail, marked by historic brass markers. Museums and historic sites. And, of course, chocolate. At the end of our day, our troupe of dusty hikers with daypacks worked its way thru crowds of well-dressed commuters. This land is our land. This day was our day. -- 09/08/2005 Thu |
