Show and tell about places in nature that were, or are, important to you. Big majestic places, or everyday places.
Who: Rich
Where: Bear Mountain
Why: Just a short drive up the Hudson River and I am in a country
paradise. The drive begins in the city, with exhaust, horns blowing and
concrete everywhere. On my way north, I take the Tappan Zee Bridge and
get one of the most spectacular views in this corner of the state. I can
see the distant New York skyline to my left and steep hillsides
sandwiching the Hudson River to my right. I know I am getting closer to
paradise.
Bear Mountain is my sanctuary from the stress of urban life. Located
roughly 45 minutes north of New York City, it is on protected land that is
dotted with small lakes and threaded with great hiking trails. I guess I
have been lucky. I seem to have found a particular trail that very few
people actually hike on. The trail is covered with boulders and offers
breath-taking views of the surrounding valleys. On a typical hike, I may
encounter one other person. Bear mountain offers fresh air, nature in its
purest sense and total solitude.
