Show and tell about places in nature that were, or are, important to you. Big majestic places, or everyday places.

A Reflecting pond in downtown Boston

Who: Jon
Where: A Reflecting pond in downtown Boston

Why: Outside the Christian Science Center in the heart of Boston, there's a massive reflecting pond in a large open air plaza. Something about the height or placement of the pond, coupled with the light in the plaza, creates an unusual effect that I've never seen anywhere else.

The water and sky seemingly reflect each other -- is the sky reflecting the water, or is it vice-versa? And both water and sky seem somehow to integrate seamlessly with the concrete and man-made elements, so that you half expect the pedestrians to walk across the water.

Inside the Christian Science Center is the Mapparium, a 30-foot-diameter stained glass globe you can walk inside and see the planet from the inside out. I'm not sure what the intended religious metaphors of these adjacent places were, but they both serve as refreshing ways to connect with the planet in the midst of crowded urban environment.
