Why: Near Columbia SC, handicapped-accessible boardwalks wind through a mysterious, magical forest, allowing visitors to view and photograph the splendor of record-sized, Spanish-moss-draped trees casting shadows on black pools, cypress knees, and lizards basking in the sun.
Late in the day, hikers may glimpse bats or hear owls calling. Fireflies increase the splendor in spring and summer.
The more adventurous can kayak or canoe on meandering creeks, backpack, bike, or fish. A large Visitor's Center with exhibits enhances the experience.
Congaree National Park is a place for discovery, relaxing, and appreciating nature's gifts. The ancient forest carries the visitor back in time.
