Show and tell about places in nature that were, or are, important to you. Big majestic places, or everyday places.
Who: John
Where: Fern Canyon Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park
Why: Fern Canyon is one of the many hiking trails in the Prairie
Creek area of Redwoods State Park. This Park is up on the North Coast of
California a few miles north of Arcata. To get to the trailhead you cross
a small prairie with elk grazing and then wind your way up and down
rolling hills through beautifull redwood forests, coming out onto the
beachs of the Pacific Ocean (with elk again grazing right beside the trail
road) and back into some more redwoods. Once you start the trail into Fern
Canyon, you follow a small stream zig-zagging back and forth and then you
have a "revelation". You're in this beatiful canyon with walls 30 to 40
feet striaght up with magnificent vegitation an a sense of tranquility.
It's special to me because it was the last hike I took while in the area
of the North Coast for training.
