Show and tell about places in nature that were, or are, important to you. Big majestic places, or everyday places.
Who: Laura
Where: Smith's Creek, Wilmington, NC
Why: As a kid, we used to "go play in the woods" at the end of our
street. One day, I kept walking all the way until I reached a tributary
to the Cape Fear River. The creek was wide and flat, and at low tide, was
shallow enough to cross. The collection of a few trees in the middle of a
stream created a small island that very few people knew about. I used to
go there daily to daydream and just get lost in the whole aura of the
place. The only trick was to come back to reality before the tides came
back and the creek was too deep to cross again.
As I grew up, I have found other hidden places, but nothing like that
"island." After several hurricanes, I always wonder if the island hasn't
eroded away. I plan on going back someday just to make sure it's still
there and maybe daydream a little while I'm there.
