Smoky Mountain National Forest

Great Smoky MountainsWhere: Smoky Mountain National Forest

Why: I don't need to hike 5 hours to get away from the sounds, smells and noise of all those people polluting the well known trails and hiking spots. Hiking just a short distance away from the sounds & smells of traffic (perhaps a 10 minute easy walk) I find myself in a pristine, silent & eternally peaceful place. It is heaven.

One of my most favorite spots is located right next to a very busy location- it's not hard to get away from the mainstream in the national park. Along the busy hike up to Clingmans Dome (always full of people) I find that if I take a small path traveling downward for only 10 to 15 minutes, I find myself alone in the "smoke" of the Smoky Mountains.

Not a single sound can be heard from all those people hiking nearby up that concrete pathway. The trees are able to muffle sounds SO magnificently; it is so still & silent that I could hear a pin drop.
