Rebuild Gulf Coast, Don't Waste Billions on Pork

As the nation explores what we can do to help the Gulf Coast region rebuild from the tragedy of Katrina, citizens across the country are digging into their pockets to provide relief.

In addition to charitable giving, some citizens are urging their states to "give back" unnecessary pork projects that were stuffed into the transportation bill this summer.

Alaskans are rallying behind an effort to redirect over $450 million in federal money to New Orleans and other affected areas. That money was designated for two Alaska "Bridges to Nowhere" by Representative Don Young (R-AK), who chairs the House Transportation Committee in Congress. One bridge would serve an island of only 50 residents, the other would connect to a virtually uninhabited region.

The effort to give this money to areas in real need – and rebuild Gulf Coast Bridges to Somewhere before wasting hundreds of millions on Alaska Bridges to Nowhere – is supported by taxpayer, citizen, and environmental organizations across the spectrum.

To learn more, and to urge your representatives to endorse this effort, visit: www.americagivesback.org.

The Sierra Club has long criticized Congressman Young's unwise Bridges to Nowhere, and advocated for spending on the true infrastructure needs of the country. For more on the Sierra Club's efforts, see: http://www.sierraclub.org/sprawl/fixitfirst/
