I am on a much-needed retreat this weekend, camping with women from the Unitarian Universalist church that I belong to. Between ceremonies, drumming circles, sending healing energy out to the planet, and reading the latest Harry Potter book, I am taking some time to rest and think about things.

It is, coincidentally, the Sierra Club that led me to this weekend, and this point in time. After moving back to Illinois from Nebraska, where I lived for a few years--and where I originally joined the Sierra Club--I went to our local Sierra Club group meeting and got involved. Our group leader, Anne Kawaters, who passed away from ovarian cancer in May, was like a mother to all of us, and she took me under her wing. It wasn't long before we were having a discussion about spirituality and environmentalism, and she suggested I come to her church some Sunday for a service. I went the next Sunday and knew I was "home."

It is great to belong to a community, a church even, where everybody feels strongly about protecting and taking care of mother earth.
