Welcome to the work of the Sustainable Consumption Committee! We are dedicated to exploring how to best minimize the use of natural resources and the byproducts of toxic materials, waste and pollution, involved in everyday consumer choices. Our efforts are aimed at: Encouraging people to think about the environmental impacts of their consumption choices - from the food we eat (or don't) to the shelter we choose; Providing information and resources that can help us make more thoughtful, educated choices as we go about satisfying daily needs and improving quality of life.
Review: "Prosperity Without Growth?" by Professor Tim Jackson
Reviewed by Charles Siegel. When a British government commission publishes a report calling for an end
to economic growth, it suddenly seems that we live in a world that is
changing its direction. Growth has been the central goal of economists
since the beginning of the industrial revolution. But Prof. Tim Jackson,
the Economics Commissioner of the UK's Sustainable Development Commission
has written a book that sums up the current state of our knowledge about
economic growth and that demonstrates convincingly that growth should end.
The Sierra Club favors energy efficiency and conservation above all
sources of energy. We have limited control over energy production
systems, but we have many options to make our homes more energy
efficient. Our True Cost of Homes Campaign has developed a web site
to guide you to these options.
The United States, with less than five per cent of the world's people, consumes over twenty five percent of its resources.
And that's not even the bad news... in response, the Sierra Club's Sustainable Consumption Committee is has launched a new, national grass roots campaign. It's focused on the one major aspect of American consumption that's probably the easiest to change: our dietary lifestyle. Our True Cost of Food Campaign, launched in spring 2003, has a fully developed Activist Toolkit which includes an animated video, resource manual, scripts for talking with restaurant owners and store managers, recipes, sample articles for you to post in your local newsletters, instructions for setting up a community supported agriculture (CSA), and lesson plans for teachers.
Feature: Sustainable Consumption can SIMPLIFY your life
Here's a great spin-off from Sustainable Consumption: Enhancing our quality of life can automatically improve the health of our planet. A simplified life regularly produces greater satisfaction, more free time, a deeper sense of community, and a lighter footprint on the environment.
