How to Set Up a Sierra Club True Cost of Food Restaurant Outing

Eat at a restaurant. Order. Start eating...

Ask the waiter to bring the manager to your table when he or she gets a chance.

Script:
Hi! (SMILE!)

I am with the Sierra Club and we would like to have an event at your restaurant on a Tuesday* night. We call these events "Sustainable Tuesdays." *or any other day that works best for your group

We are promoting organic, locally grown produce and vegetarian or organic, locally grown meat and I wonder if you could put together a menu plan for about 20 people at a fixed price?

Can you be sure it is organic and locally grown?
Can you do it for $15, tip included?
Can you include organic tea or juice in the price?

Give me your number and I will call you and give you a date.

Options:

  1. Collect the money in advance from your members and pay the owner with one check. (Restaurants like this better.)
  2. Attendees pay when they get there. (easier)
  3. You might want to show the True Cost of Food video or have a local farmer, retailer or chef come to speak.
During the event:
  • Try to have large tables where people can mingle.
  • Brief announcements/call for volunteers/NO LONG SPEECHES!
