Portland Sierra Club Marches for Fair Trade
Recently, the Sierra Club in Portland has been working with a coalition of groups to organize two events surrounding the 6th Ministerial of the World Trade Organization in Hong Kong.
The Sierra Club joined with over 50 community, labor, and environmental organizations to plan a December 10th rally to "Say No to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Yes to the Right to Organize." Over 1500 concerned citizens came out in the cold weather to speak out against trade policies that undermine our environmental protections and erode our ability to promote labor and human rights.
The next weekend on December 17th, the coalition held a teach-in with 10 workshops of different issues involving the WTO and free trade. The Sierra Club facilitated a workshop on the Environmental Impacts of Free Trade. Over 80 people came to participate in the teach-in, and a dozen came to the Sierra Club teach-in on the environmental impacts.
Turning out that many people over two weekends near the holiday season was an amazing show of joint power of the coalition. These actions represent the power that the progressive community has when we come together to work towards a common goal. It was a great opportunity for the Sierra Club to make deeper ties into the labor community and other progressive organizations in Portland. Some of the main coalition partners were the Oregon AFL-CIO, Jobs with Justice, AFSME Local 88 and Local 189, Portland Central American Solidarity Committee, Northwest Resistance against Genetic Engineering, United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 247, and Oregon Fair Trade Coalition.
