Feature: Violence in Peruvian Amazon Stems from U.S.-Peru Free Trade Agreement

Violence in Peru.On June 5, 2009, armed military police instigated deadly violence against indigenous Peruvians. The clash erupted after police began tear gassing and, later on, shooting into a group of 5,000 indigenous protestors. No less than 28 protestors were killed and 150 injured; at least eight police officers were killed as well. The previously-peaceful protests occurred in response to Peruvian President Alan García's hurried attempt to implement the U.S.-Peru Free Trade Agreement (FTA), issuing a series of decrees that would increase illegal logging in the Peruvian rainforest, usurp indigenous land and natural resource wealth, and privatize water in the Amazon. García's proposal not only threatened the biodiversity and natural resources of the Peruvian Amazon, but also infringed upon the sovereignty of indigenous Amazonian communities.

Take action: Urge President Obama and Congress to denounce the Garcia Administration's violent repression of its people, repeal the unconstitutional "free" trade laws, and open meaningful debate with indigenous communities concerning any development in the Amazon.

Feature: Current Trade Model Contributes to Climate Change

Climate change is a challenge of global proportions that stands to impact all creatures on earth. This challenge is largely the result of globalization and the patterns of production, consumption, and development it encourages. To meet surging demand for cheap products, our natural resources have been exploited while the rights of workers, communities and the environment are pushed aside to make way for corporate profit. Fortunately, there are solutions to this devastating cycle that can stem the tide of global warming, while safeguarding the livelihood of workers and moving the country toward a cleaner and more energy-efficient future.
