Accomplishments
The Sierra Club's Lone Star (Texas) Chapter has prepared to join lawsuits by
landowners against expanding dairies, and against the Texas Commission on
Environmental Quality for its continued permitting of these facilities. The
project is also conducting a full file audit of the Texas Natural Resource
Conservation Commission's regulatory history governing industrial dairies in
the watersheds.
Other accomplishments include:
- The Texas Water Sentinels project has focused strong statewide media
attention on the state's industrial dairy problems.
- We've organized an unprecedented coalition of landowners, city governments,
and county health districts to oppose an industrial dairy permit expansion on
the Leon River.
- We've collaborated with the City of Waco to develop a watershed sampling
plan and conduct chemical analyses at the city's water treatment plant
laboratory.
- The project is also partnered with Texas Watch, a statewide volunteer
monitoring organization, to train and certify volunteers to collect and
analyze quality-assured water chemistry data.
