Northern Kentucky Our Mission The Northern Kentucky Water Sentinels endeavor to protect, improve and restore Kentucky's waters by fostering alliances to promote water quality monitoring, public education and citizen action. The Northern Kentucky Water Sentinels project began in 2001 and since then has an impressive array of accomplishments. We take our mission very seriously and it speaks volumes about the work that we do and how we go about doing it, so it's worth examining just what it means. We have been very careful to define our geographic reach as Kentucky's waters. Although we do most of our work in the Licking River Watershed, we do not limit ourselves exclusively to issues in the Licking River Region. It is important to know that we are a resource to all the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and that we will lend our support to defend all of Kentucky's waterways. We work to protect those waters that are unspoiled and defend them against those whose actions may bring them into harms way. We work to improve the quality of waters that today are impaired and we work to restore the aquatic habitat to its original pristine condition. Recognizing that we can't do it alone, we foster alliances with other like-minded citizens and organizations to accomplish our goals. Building alliances is an essential component of our success. We work with the Licking River Watershed Watch and the Kentucky Division of Water to recruit and train citizen volunteers to do water quality monitoring in the region. Our training meets all of the standards set forth by the Kentucky Division of Water so that the results of our monitoring are more likely to be considered in the regulatory process. We provide public education to teachers, school children, church groups, conservation organizations, hunting and fishing clubs and anyone else who will listen to our message. An educated public is more likely to act in a responsible manner to help protect, improve and restore our waters. And finally, Northern Kentucky Water Sentinels provide a framework for citizen action. Public participation is a critically important component in the process of protecting, improving and restoring Kentucky's waters. But all too frequently, the public is unfamiliar with the mechanisms available to them and how to go about creating change. Northern Kentucky Water Sentinels provides the leadership and guidance to assist citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky in accessing the necessary tools to protect, improve and restore the waters of Kentucky.
