Texas rivers polluted by runoff from mega-dairies
The N. Bosque and Leon River watersheds are home to more
than 100 industrial-scale dairies producing about 1.8 million
tons of animal waste annually. The contaminated runoff from
these operations has polluted eight stream segments in the two
watersheds, and is threatening the downstream drinking-water
supplies of the cities of Waco, Temple and Belton.
The Texas Water Sentinels are conducting extensive chemical
water-quality monitoring in the basins of the Bosque and Leon
rivers. The water quality monitoring began in January 2002 with
six sample sites located downstream of areas with high concentrations
of dairies.
The project is firmly allied with the city of Waco, and staff worked
closely with city personnel to design a sampling protocol for the
basins. Water samples are analyzed via the city's water treatment
lab.

There are lots of ways to help Texas Sentinels!
The Texas Water Sentinels Campaign is based in the offices
of the Sierra Club's Lone Star Chapter in Austin. The project
is working in and around the cities of Temple, Belton, Killeen,
Waco and areas west in the Bosque and Leon River watersheds.
We're looking for interested folks to help conduct research,
participate in public outreach events and become volunteer
water-quality monitors.
Some folks love climbing into a streambed to take a water
sample, but there are plenty of other ways to help! For more
information, contact Justin Taylor at (512) 477-1729, or email
at justin.taylor@sierraclub.org.
