So you want to do the right thing and buy energy for your home that's sourced through solar and wind power, rather than by a coal-fired power plant. Is that possible?
In some cases, yes. And if it's not, you might be able to lead the charge on getting your energy provider to make it available.
First, check out your energy provider's website or call them to see if they offer you the ability to choose renewable energy over conventional. (Note that there is often a small price increase for this feature if offered.) Just look at the latest bill you've received to find a website or phone number that should give you a good starting place.
If you do the research and learn that your energy provider doesn't offer renewable energy, write to them and ask them to start. Let them know that you're a customer who would like to buy green energy. Another option is to purchase your own annual carbon offsets from organizations like Terra Pass and the Carbon Fund. These organizations invest 100% of your money into purchasing renewable energy that will replace non-renewable fossil fuel-based energy.
Here are a few examples of energy companies that do allow you to purchase renewable energy. If you read up on what's available and how it works, you'll be better prepared to make the case to your own provider.
Good luck!
