Threats to Alaska
Alaska offers some of the most pristine and scenic coastlines in the world. The state's waters are home to thriving salmon fisheries as well as magnificent wildlife like polar bears, whales, sea otters, sea lions, and walruses. Some of these creatures are found no where else in our country.
But these waters are under threat from Big Oil. The Interior Department's Minerals Management Service is preparing to open 78 million acres of Alaskan shoreline to oil and gas development. Drilling would take place in Bristol Bay--home of one of the world's largest salmon runs--and in America's Polar Bear Seas--the Chukchi and Beaufort. Drilling in these areas would not only destroy Alaska's thriving commercial and tourist fishing industries, it would threaten the survival of marine life, including the polar bear.

President Bush Liftes Ban on Drilling in Bristol Bay, Alaska
On January 9, 2007, President Bush lifted the ban on drilling off the southwest coast of Alaska in the fragile, salmon-rich waters of Bristol Bay. Bristol Bay, one of the world's most productive marine systems for fish, marine mammals and migratory birds, has enjoyed federal protection since the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989.
