Protect Wildlands
Land and Water Conservation Fund

Special Fund Helps Protect Wild Places

Coolwater Ridge, Rackliff/Gedney Roadless AreaProviding special protections for our most precious wildlands -- from national treasures like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to the "small and sacred places" in our own backyards -- is essential for all Americans. For over a hundred years, we have been setting aside special places so that they may be preserved for future generations.

The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), which provides funds for federal land acquisition and state lands conservation, has been a valuable tool in these efforts for nearly 40 years. But Congress has drastically underfunded the LWCF and other crucial conservation programs over the years. As a result, America's precious wild places are being lost.

Still, there's hope: A new conservation funding initiative, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in Congress in 2000, is providing increasing amounts of funding for the LWCF each year. We hope to see even more funding for this crucial program in fiscal year 2002 than was made available for the current year.

The Sierra Club Wildlands Campaign is endeavoring to take full advantage of the boost in funding for the LWCF by identifying those projects that are most important to our Sierra Club members. Last year, with the help of our volunteers, we created a Sierra Club LWCF priority list and educated members of Congress on those projects. As a result, nine projects that Sierra Club members have been working on were funded in 2001. We'll continue to work toward increased funding for this important program during this year's appropriations cycle, including those projects included on the Sierra Club's LWCF priority list.
