Blackwater Canyon, West Virginia
Nestled in the Monongahela National Forest,
Blackwater Canyon is one of the most popular natural areas in West Virginia. Hikers come
from all over to explore the canyon's rugged slopes, green forests and the rushing waters
of Blackwater River. Some visitors are lucky enough to see a northern flying squirrel -
an endangered species.
Now this important piece of West Virginia's natural heritage is
seriously threatened by logging. The canyon has been used by the public for almost a
century, but it has always been privately owned. In February 1997, it was sold to
Allegheny Wood Products, which started logging operations and closed off access to many
favorite trails and overlooks.
The unparalleled scenic vista from Lindy Point is already marred by logging scars, and
the habitat of the endangered northern flying squirrel is at risk. Allegheny Wood Products
has signed an agreement to temporarily halt logging in the area, but the only way to
protect this crown jewel of West Virginia from further destruction is to secure public
ownership of the land.
The Sierra Club is urging Allegheny Wood Products to sell this land to the U.S. Forest
Service, National Park Service or West Virginia State Parks.
