Sagebrush Grasslands Outings

Sierra Club Wyoming Chapter, partnering with Sage Spirit, is working to engage concerned citizens to help preserve undeveloped sagebrush landscapes and the wildlife that depends on them.  We invite you to join us to visit some of these special places this summer, to learn more about the incredible wildlife and other natural values they support, and how you can get involved to help protect them for future generations.

June 13th, Saturday: Day Hike to The Big Hole

Join Laramie and Cheyenne Sierra Club leaders and members to explore a magical place southwest of Cheyenne, just north of the Colorado border.  With a Nature Conservancy guide, we’ll visit an area of beautiful shortgrass and shrubland prairie called The Big Hole, as well as nearby conservation easements on private lands in similar habitats.  We will discuss the ecological value of these high plains habitats while enjoying an easy day hike and, possibly, some volunteer work activities.  Because we will be on private land for parts of the day, we cannot allow dogs.  This outing will be limited to 14 participants including the leader.  To sign up or to get more information contact Martha Martinez del Rio at (307) 399-8353 or marthamdelrio@gmail.com.

June 27-28: Weekend Car Camping & Day Hikes at the Devil's Playground

We will visit Devil’s Playground Wilderness Study Area, a beautiful area just west of Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, about 25 miles from Green River. Bring your families, dogs, guitars, ukuleles, harmonicas, and marshmallows for an enjoyable weekend together. We'll hike into sagebrush grasslands known for fossils, evidence of early humans, intricate badlands, and great wilderness character.   Contact Connie Wilbert to sign up and for more information at (307) 742-0056 or connie.wilbert@sierraclub.org.

July 18, Saturday: Sweetwater Canyon Day Hike

Join us on a hike into the Sweetwater Canyon Wilderness Study Area, about 15 miles southeast of South Pass City in Fremont County.  We'll visit this outstanding remote area to explore the Sweetwater River at the bottom of a 500-foot-deep gorge.  Our hike will focus on the area’s wilderness character, history, sage grouse habitat above the rim of the canyon, other birds and wildlife, and may include sampling one of the Sweetwater River's inviting swimming holes. This hike will be suitable for hikers age six and up. No dogs, please, due to possible encounters with ground nesting birds.  Do bring binoculars! For more information and to sign up, contact Jazmyn McDonald at (307) 332-3455 or jzmc@wyoming.com.
