A New Generation of Activists
Seattle WA
July 7, 2006
I am back from a wonderful two weeks in Europe watching the World Cup in Germany. I was impressed with how fans of every country got along. I have gained a special respect for fans from Australia who after a hard 1-0 last second loss to Italy continued to dance the night away.
Building Bridges to the Outdoors will be hosting a July 24th training in Los Angeles 'Justice for All Communities' which will provide young diverse activists from around the country training in how to put together campiagns in their communities on environmental justice issues. One of the lead trainers will be our volunteer youth coordinator Juan Martinez who had his life turned around through an outdoor experience provided by the Sierra Club six years ago. Now a leader in Los Angeles on environmental issues, Juan is the perfect example of how an outdoor experience can inspire a young person to not only turn their life around but become a leader on the environmental challenges of the future. We are working in partnership on the training with the Sierra Student Coalition www.ssc.org and the Sierra Club's Environmental Justice Program.
I also wanted to let folks know that the North American Association of Environmental Education will be holding thier annual conference in St.Paul, MN from Oct 11-14. The conference is a wonderful networking opportunity as well as a chance to attend some excellent workshops. The Sierra Club for the second year in a row will be a sponsor. Fore more information go to NAAEE's website at www.naaee.org.
Enjoy your summer and when in doubt turn off the TV and go outside!
Cheers-Martin
