Major SoCal Climate Decision June 6 - Speak Up for Clean Air Now!

by Ayn Craciun

Southern California’s air remains among the dirtiest in the nation. The American Lung Association confirms that Los Angeles continues to be the smoggiest city in the U.S. Meanwhile, SoCalGas and its allies are working to weaken long-overdue pollution rules designed to clean up our air.

On June 6 at 9am, the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) will vote on a critical proposal to reduce pollution from gas-burning furnaces and water heaters — a hidden but significant source of smog-forming emissions. Take action! Send an email to the SCAQMD Board of Directors in support of clean air now and  RSVP for the June 6 SCAQMD hearing.

Strong rules would transition these polluting appliances to zero-emission alternatives, protecting your health, putting money back in your pocket and boosting our economy:

  • Community Health Savings: The implementation of these rules will prevent 4,000 premature deaths, 16,000 cases of newly onset asthma, and 4,000 emergency room visits.
  • Lower Energy Bills & Significant Savings: Switching to zero-emission electric heat pumps will substantially reduce recurring energy costs. SCAQMD estimates regional savings between $2.68 billion and $5.14 billion from 2027 to 2060. That’s about $191–$250 million saved per year by households across Southern California.
  • Job Creation & Economic Growth: Transitioning to zero-emission appliances will create an average of 580 jobs per year, especially in installation, retail, and service industries, while stimulating local economic activity.

Local Opposition Fueled by Misinformation

In recent weeks, several Orange County cities — including Huntington Beach, Yorba Linda, Brea, and Lake Forest — have adopted resolutions opposing the proposed SCAQMD rules. But these resolutions are based on misleading talking points from the gas industry, downplaying both the health dangers of gas appliances and the benefits of cleaner alternatives. While opponents cite costs, they ignore the billions in savings, health protections, and job growth these rules will deliver.
