Earth Day 2026: Bringing Our Community Together

By Mason Oney

This Spring, the NYC Group hosted an effervescent Earth Day gathering and musical fundraiser, creating a space for environmental advocates in and around New York City to celebrate and motivate one another. The event, entitled Sierra Sessions, and connected to a network of related events happening in other groups across the country, was hosted at Miru, a rooftop Japanese listening lounge in Chelsea, well suited for a large number of people traveling from different boroughs and surrounding areas. Over 100 Sierra Club members and friends signed up from across the city, to thoughtfully come together and share common passions. Conversations were based around curiosity, concerns, and successes to motivate future generations with a sense of community and purpose regarding our shared environment. The NYC Group would like to thank all the attendees, members, special guests, and entertainers for sharing their time and support.

Earth Day is one of the few days of the year when responsibility for our planet becomes a visible, common goal for the broader community. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to forget we have a mutual responsibility to give back to the planet when daily life gets in the way. Maintaining balance between our Earth’s systems cannot be solely left to Mother Nature; it’s up to all of us. The scale of environmental issues can be overwhelming, but events like Sierra Sessions help remind us we aren't alone in the fight. When like-minded environmentalists come together, whether to learn, volunteer, or just connect, it reminds us about the many ways people like me and you can make meaningful change, even in small ways.

The evening’s atmosphere was enhanced by an electrifying live music stream from multiple musicians who portrayed environmental stewardship through their performances, including the Bronx’s own Hurray for the Riff Raff. The show sparked interest, joy, and engagement throughout the night. While donations were encouraged to raise money for important programs and efforts the NYC Group runs all year long, anyone could simply enjoy the event. Attendees noted how important it felt to get together in-person with a sense of hope – seeing their colleagues and also meeting new people. The balance between entertainment and meaningful discussion brought about a welcoming environment where collaboration and shared purpose comfortably thrived.

Thanks again to everyone who made this truly special event possible. It’s rare to gather so many amazingly engaged, enthusiastic, and inspiring people in one place. Beyond Earth Day, we invite everyone to continue practicing sustainable habits in their daily lives and get involved in whatever way you can. Contact us to get involved with our diverse work, including combatting waste and toxic chemicals, transitioning our energy system to renewables, and championing more sustainable transportation. Any amount of effort counts.

If you’re interested in becoming more involved, we welcome you to join us for future events and volunteering opportunities. We’re excited to get the community together in person more often and look forward to seeing you at the next gathering.

Thank you also to the incredible sponsors of this event, making it all possible, including Miru, Common Good, Vital Climbing Gym, Kew and Willow Books, The Comedy Cellar, and all our donors.
