On June 3rd at 10 a.m., we will begin a tour of the Wicomico County's landfill to learn first-hand about the "mountain" of problems we have accrued around our garbage production. This tour will provide lessons in how we handle waste in our society and information about what we produce and what we do with it.
Register here and climb Trash Mountain with us. We can improve our methods, our behaviors and reduce our amount of waste.
That beautiful Great Blue Heron pictured above may one day succumb to the trash it mistakenly eats from our polluted streams and rivers. Tour Trash Mountain (highest point on the Lower Eastern Shore!) and see for yourself why we need major changes to our conceptions of "waste" and to our tolerance for unnecessary waste. Changes to our everyday actions can help reduce waste, reduce its poisoning of our environment, and reduce the costs to our health. We may even prevent some beautiful shore birds from dying unnecessarily!
Following the adventure at Trash Mountain, we will drive to Pemberton Historical Park, 5661 Plantation Drive, Salisbury, MD for a picnic lunch and in person General Membership Meeting! Pack your lunch. You are invited to explore the beautiful trails at Pemberton Park on your own following the meeting.
Register here to learn the facts about what we dispose of and how that is treated. Together, we can commit to doing our part to reduce the amount of trash we create and the degree of harm it does to our environment.
We hope to see you there for our first field trip/picnic/general membership meeting! You can register to participate here.
On another note, as local as we are, we still like to keep up with some of the more expansive news about Sierra Club's efforts to protect our public lands and preserve the sanctity of our wildlife. Right now, national parks, national forests and national seashores are all at risk of sale for profit, so Congress can give tax breaks to special interests.
Read more here about the contemptible idea of selling our public lands.
We know you care. Now we ask you to act.
Thanks for all you do for the environment,
Jacky Grindrod Vice-Chair Sierra Club Lower Eastern Shore Group
