We stood atop Trash Mountain with our excellent tour guide, recycling coordinator Jennifer Albero, who along with superintendent Adam Corry, presented in-depth information on the County's endless struggle to handle the enormous amount of garbage it receives every day.
The link above takes you to Wicomico County's Solid Waste Division website where you can find detailed information on recycling here and here, the County code for garbage, rubbish and refuse here, and hazardous materials here.
As useful as that information is, what you will not find, and what they and we know all too well, is that recycling alone will never solve the plastic pollution problem thatwe eat and drink and inhale every day.
Most "recyclables" are never recycled, and those that are only get recycled once or twice. The stuff sticks around for centuries, while our ecosystem dies slowly and we get sick because of it.
If this bothers you as much as it does us, review some of the organizations dedicated to this fight: Bottleless Nation, Plastic Pollution Coalition, and Impactful Ninja . These are good places to begin your own personal fight to end this awful scourge. Close to home, Surfrider in Ocean City, part of a national foundation, offers effective suggestions as well.
Meanwhile, check us out at the Lower Eastern Shore website, and visit our friends at GoGreenOC to see their incredible accomplishment in reducing millions of tons of food waste that also clogs our landfills.
Thanks for all you do for the environment, Jacky Grindrod Vice-Chair Sierra Club Lower Eastern Shore Group
