Make your voice heard on Election Day!
The Massachusetts Primary Election is coming up soon, and the Sierra Club Massachusetts is proud to announce several endorsements.
Our team of volunteers crafted questionnaires, conducted candidate outreach and interviews, compiled research, listened to our broader member feedback, and moved to endorse these strong legislative leaders and challengers.
One theme kept coming up in our discussions: we must address legislative accountability.
We endorse candidates that we believe will be environmental champions. Step 1 is campaigning like an environmental champion, but it is more important to actually govern as so. For that, we can see whether legislators are putting rhetoric into action in their votes.
At the same time that our endorsement criteria were being developed, the House’s energy bill (H.5151) emerged, including a $1B cut from the Mass Save budget. Advocates from across the Commonwealth called their representatives to oppose these draconian cuts and to urge them to support an amendment (#113) to restore the Mass Save budget. The good news: 17 of them did! The bad news was that the vast majority did not.
We are cognizant of the difficulties of legislating. We also have an expectation that when constituents from across the Commonwealth speak, our elected leaders listen. We have drawn a “line in the sand” so to speak and used this vote in favor of Amendment #113 to H.5151 – as an important piece of criteria in our endorsement process. When push comes to shove, we need fighters for the people, willing to stand on behalf of their constituents.
As you review our endorsements, all incumbent State Representatives that we have endorsed stood up for their constituents and voted to maintain the Mass Save budget. This represents the type of leadership we need at the Massachusetts State House.
The decision to prioritize the bill and protect the Mass Save budget was a difficult decision, as there are many legislators working on important issues that we support and indeed, prioritize. We appreciate their partnership. We also need to know that when it comes time to vote, that representation alone will be the deciding factor. Not leadership, not corporate lobbyists. We make no claims to know the motivation behind every vote, only that our constituency was not represented on this important issue.
We believe that progress is possible in our legislature, and it begins with us.
