Please support the local enviro group Friends Aiding Wildlife in Nature (FAWN). Roger and Irene Smith founded this after they witnessed tragic images of wildlife trapped in wire fencing while vacationing in the Northwest. Upon returning home to their rural home in California, they discovered a dead doe hanging from wire fencing on their own property. This tragic coincidence raised their awareness of a largely under-recognized problem for wildlife, and in 2024 they formed the non-profit corporation, FAWN.
FAWN’s mission is to remove fencing that no longer serves a purpose, with owner permission, using only volunteer labor, and to educate the public about this problem that kills and estimated 100,000 animals each year.
FAWN has removed miles of wire fencing since its inception including projects on State-managed recreational lands, land trust preserves and private property. The non-profit welcomes new projects and volunteers and is eager to be a model for other communities.
“We welcome the opportunity to make presentations in order to raise awareness of this avoidable problem for our beautiful native animals", say the Smiths.
