Allegheny Group Nov 2 Election Endorsements

The Allegheny Group of the Sierra Club is proud to announce our endorsed candidates for the November 2, 2021 General Election:  Ed Gainey for Pittsburgh Mayor, Anita Prizio for Allegheny County Council District 3, Erika Strassburger for Pittsburgh City Council District 8, and Connor Mulvaney for Pittsburgh City Council District 4.

City of Pittsburgh Mayor
Ed Gainey won the Democratic nomination for Mayor of Pittsburgh in the Primary  Election May 18, 2021.  He achieved his victory by building a coalition of supporters and volunteers rooted in the black community but consisting in large part of progressive and social justice activist communities.  He supports police accountability, LGBT-rights, immigrant rights, women’s rights and environmentalism.  He has a 98% pro-environment voting record in the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives District 24, where he served for 8 years.  He is endorsed by many Pittsburgh City Council members, Allegheny County Council members, Pittsburgh School board members,  Clean Water Action, unions, and many other progressive organizations.  During the primary he built a strong, viable campaign team which will support a victory over his opponents in November.  More details are available at his website

Allegheny County Council District 3
Anita Prizio, the incumbent, received our Sierra Club endorsement in 2017.  She has proven to be a strong advocate for our issues during the last 4 years.  She successfully got the Council to create the Sustainability and Green Initiatives Committee and is its Chair.  She is a proponent of equity, racial and economic equality and has been a key participant in the Western Pennsylvania Energy Consortium.  She endorses many of the climate initiatives that the Sierra Club supports and is a strong, essential voice on Council for our views.  She is endorsed by various elected officials, community organizations, and Community leaders.  More details are available at her website

Pittsburgh City Council District 8
Erika Strassburger, the incumbent, has been a strong advocate for our issues during the past 2 years.  She has a strong knowledge and commitment to the environment, having graduated with a degree in Environmental Studies.  She has fought for clean air, water, and renewable energy.  She is vocal against the Shell Cracker plant in Beaver, is good on the storm water runoff issue, is trying to reduce landslides, wants to replace lead water lines, and wants to work on climate change among other things.  More details are available at www.facebook.com- erikaforcouncil.

Pittsburgh City Council District 4
Connor Mulvaney, the Green Party Candidate,  is challenging Anthony Coghill, the incumbent.  Mr. Mulvaney will be a strong advocate for all our environmental issues (e.g., a 2030 target for reaching net-zero emissions, Pittsburgh’s Climate Action Plan, industrial pollution accountability, public transportation, lead poisoning).  Mr. Coghill has not been an advocate for environmental issues during his time in office.  Mr. Mulvaney is enthusiastic and has a good campaign strategy to connect with all residents in the district.  More details are available. here

We urge ALL Sierra Club members to support these candidates by volunteering for their campaigns (even if you can’t vote for them), supporting them financially, and spreading the word to friends, neighbors, and relatives.  Boots on the ground make a difference!   Your support MAKES THE DIFFERENCE!
