WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Endangered Species Act, one of the bedrock environmental laws of the United States, coming into force.

Overwhelming majorities in both the United States House of Representatives and Senate passed the Act. Since it was signed into law by President Richard Nixon, the Endangered Species Act has become one of the most significant environmental laws in U.S. history. It has saved from extinction 99 percent of all the species listed for protection.

ALBANY, NY -- Today, Governor Kathy Hochul signed the Birds and Bees Protection Act into law. The new law will eliminate 80-90 percent of the toxic class of pesticides called neonicotinoids, or neonics for short, from entering New York’s environment. The law will prohibit the use of unneeded neonic coatings on corn, soybean, and wheat seeds and non-agricultural lawn and garden uses.

It is the second lease sale the Biden Administration has held in 2023, and it is the last scheduled sale until 2025, under the recently finalized five-year plan for offshore drilling.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the United States Forest Service is expected to announce a Notice of Intent to create a nationwide amendment to all Forest Plans centering protection of remaining old-growth trees. 

The amendment would be an important step towards fulfilling President Biden’s Executive Order 14072, which committed the United States to “identify, inventory, and protect” old-growth forests on federal lands.
