2025-26: The Year Your ICO Group Explores The Monkey Condos. By Rob Schamberg, ICO Chair

Monkey Condos

Feeling a bit weary of the snow last May, Suzy and I found a unique desert hike that checks all the Reno ICO boxes: Beauty, views, fascinating nature, great geology, hills (but not too steep), a doable 5 miles, and accessible by bus. The Monkey Condos hike has it all – and even the name is fun!

Pyramid Lake

As ICO groups are planning their year, this trip would be great for the shoulder seasons. March, April, May, October, and November are the best months to visit the Monkey Condos when the weather and snow conditions in the mountains are unpredictable. Spring months slightly beat out the fall as there is a small spring/rivulet that runs down the trail.

Geology

All Trails has a perfect Monkey Condos route and clear driving directions. You will definitely want to download the map before heading out as there is no cell service in this backcountry area. I would recommend that you plan on a 5-6 hour outing to allow for a snack break, lunch, and exploring the Monkey Condos, and just to spend time rambling around.

Educational opportunities are boundless. There are multiple geologic formations to explore. Desert wildlife and plant life are abundant and varied throughout. There is a desert lake in the view – You can talk about this lake, why it is there, what feeds it, and how it was formed. It is also an opportunity to talk about the endangered Lahontan Trout that are prized in this lake. Elevation, climate, conservation, and safely hiking in the desert are all topics that are great to explore in this environment.
