Nevada Urban Indians (NVUI) is providing a two-part Youth Outdoor Leadership Camp this summer. The camp kicks off with a 4-day backpacking trip followed by a July 31st- August 2nd whitewater rafting trip. Steve Hedrick. an ICO Volunteer and Provisional Trip Leader leads the Native Connections Program at NVUI and is coordinating the camp. Backpacking Trip - July 9-12
Steve is looking for a chaperone to assist him on the Backpacking Trip. This Trip is actually led by the great folks at the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA). The TRTA provides two backpacking guides to lead trip logistics, safety, and medical/first aid. Steve is looking for a "kind and adventurous adult" to help out with emotional support for the youth during the trip. The time commitment would be to attend a training backpacking trip June 13-14 and then join the youth trip with Steve on July 9-12. The trip will be to Round and Dardanelles Lakes on the Tahoe Rim Trail, hiking no more than 3 miles a day, with a 30-35lb pack. All backpacking gear is provided. no experience is needed and it is not even required that you are an ICO Volunteer. Stipend Available!
Whitewater Rafting Trip - July 31st-August 2
Three ICO volunteers are invited to join a 2-day Class 3 whitewater rafting trip on the South Fork of the American River. There is no cost for the trip, which would ordinarily cost $250-$500. No experience is necessary. You will help with food and supporting youth in camping. Certified whitewater guides will take you safely down the river. Contact Steve with questions and to sign up. All ICO volunteers must have had a background check.
