PS 159's Adventure: Hiking and Candle Making at Westmoreland Sanctuary!

On Sunday January 22nd, PS 159’s 3rd to 5th grade Explorers experienced a beautiful day at Westmoreland Sanctuary.  They first learned all about the history of candles and were engaged in making their own hand-dipped candles.  The realized how long it takes to make one candle and learned that kids used to be responsible for making 400 candles a year!

Following a nice lunch outside in the fresh air, students went on a 2 mile hike on beautiful hiking trails.  They discovered a pond, learned how to follow trail markers, saw evidence of the Emerald Ash Boring Beetle, and saw a deer.

What a beautiful January day outdoors!
