PS 159 go Overnight Camping- 2 nights!

For the first time ever, PS 159 students went on a TWO night overnight camping trip at AMC Harriman.  In the words of one 5th grader when she returned to school on Monday, "Estoy tan cansada todavia."  (I am still so tired!).  Students were exhausted after three days of outdoor fun!  There were so many firsts over the three days- first time camping in a tent, swimming,  kayaking, canoeing, making S'mores, hiking, and even using a can opener to open the can of tuna for lunch.

During the hike, students took five minutes to have a listening walk and just walk using their ears, and not their mouths.  They learned the value of walking in silence and how much more they are able to see and to hear.  They saw Mountain Laurel, dragonflies, and heard a woodpecker.

Students worked together as a team during the whole weekend, to set up their tents, to cook the food, and during the outdoor activities.  During the hike, roles were divided up amongst the students- some as leaders, sweepers, Toastmasters to remind us all to drink our water, First Aid leader to seek help if anyone got hurt.

Students discussed the importance of setting goals on the trip, especially as they will soon be entering middle school and talked about things they want to leave behind.. habits they would like to adjust to make them more positive.

A great experience for all!
