Picking Apples and Making our own Apple Cider!

PS 159 was blessed with a beautiful fall day for our trip, after many rainy days this month! The leaves were gorgeous shades of red, orange, and yellow and we felt the crisp air on our cheeks! Such a great group of volunteers came out to help- ICO volunteers, CatRock youth leaders, and staff from PS 159. It was fun to have a specific purpose to picking apples this year... besides the experience of course and taste testing all different varieties of apples- that being to make apple cider. We walked up and down the rows of Outhouse Orchards and found some enormous apples. "This is the biggest apple I have ever seen!" exclaimed many students. We found many different varieties- from Cortland to Daybreak to Suncrisp. Then we made our way to Westmoreland Sanctuary, one of PS 159's favorite places, where we turned our apples into cider! We learned all about the apple cider press, and were able to work our arm muscles by grinding down our apples and then turning them into cider! Students all were able to bring home a jar of fresh picked- homemade cider to share with their families.
