Fight for Clean Air in Chicago!

Come join the fight against climate change, and learn more about how you can help clean Chicago's air. Join one of our monthly team meetings, normally held the second Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Sierra Club office, 70 East Lake Street, Suite 1500 (Google Map).

Current Campaigns

  • Ready for 100: Urging Chicago to commit to 100% clean, renewable energy by 2035. The city has passed a resolution, backed by Mayor Lightfoot, commiting to 100% clean, renewable energy for ALL buildings (public and private) by 2035 and electrification of the bus fleet by 2040. This builds on an earlier pledge to power all municipal buildings with renewable energy by 2025.

We now will work to ensure the transition plan is equitable and incorporates the input of all stakeholders. We're engaged with the Mayor's Office, and actively working on outreach to other community groups. Our Ready for 100 Team (a sub-team of Air & Energy) meets on the first Monday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Sierra Club office.

  • Clean Energy Jobs Act: In 2016 Illinois passed the Future Energy Jobs Act, setting a structure for renewable energy, energy efficiency, and community solar to grow throughout the state. The Clean Energy Jobs Act is an even more ambitious refresh, intended to get Illinois fully decarbonized by 2050, and to decarbonize the electricity sector by 2030.

  • Solar for All: Building support for and awareness of community solar. The Future Energy Jobs Act has created a great deal of opportunity to expand community solar projects, which will be a crucial piece of Chicago's clean energy transition.

  • Transportation: Our Transportation Team (a sub-team of Air & Energy) works on issues involving Chicago's trains, buses, biking, electric vehicles, transportation infrastructure, and more.

  • Recycling: We are developing recommendations to reform Chicago's recycling program, reduce waste, and increase recycling and composting, as called for in Sierra Club's 2019 Chicago Environmental Platform. Please contact us if you'd like to help with this project.

  • Energy Efficiency: Chicago households have many unrealized opportunities to save money and energy. We've helped conduct energy-efficiency house parties in the past. Please contact us if you're interested in helping further our education and outreach efforts.

  • Beyond Oil: Supporting various efforts to oppose oil infrastructure. Most of these efforts occur outside Chicago (where the oil infrastructure is located), so we primarly partner with and support other Sierra Club groups and allies throughout the state.
