Special Film and Presentation on Tar Sands Pipelines in the Midwest

On Monday, March 9, 2015 at 7:30 p.m., the Center for Spirituality and Sustainability (CSS) at the Geodesic Dome on the campus of SIUE and the Piasa Palisades Group of the Sierra Club, will present a special screening of a new film, From the Pipeline: A Journey Along Flanagan South. The program will include a presentation by Caitlin Zera, Director. Zera is a filmmaker from Saint Louis, Missouri, who is interested in social and environmental documentary work with a focus on public media and art. Her short film End of Line has been featured at several international film festivals. She has published scholarship in academic journals, including Film Matters and The Journal of Short Film.

At 593 miles long, the Flanagan South Tar Sands Pipeline stretches across Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois, traveling under rivers and cutting through farmland, wetlands, and wildlife areas. It carries tar sands, one of the most ecologically destructive oil products, at nearly 600,000 barrels a day, rivaling the capacity of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. From the Pipeline captures the stories of the changing landscapes and communities along the entire Missouri route of the Flanagan South Tar Sands pipeline. The pipeline impacts everyone and everything, from farmers to concerned citizens, from unnamed creeks to the mighty Mississippi River itself.

All are invited to join our speaker at Wang Gang restaurant in Edwardsville at 5:30 pm. Wang Gang is located at 1035 Century Drive in Edwardsville in the small mall across from Edwardsville High School. CSS is located on the campus of SIUE west of the Morris University Center South Circle Drive off Visitor Parking Lot B. For more information, contact Chris Krusa at 618-288-2681.
