September Speaker Series: Birdscaping: Native Plant Landscaping for Birds

Many of us have bird feeders in our yards, but did you know that native plants are the best bird feeders? Birdscaping is landscaping for the benefit of the birds. To start, what is a native plant? We’ll discuss why native plants are important, how different types of plants function in the landscape and what plants are favored by birds. Love hummingbirds? We will talk about their needs as well. Creating a bird-friendly habitat involves more than just plants, so we’ll touch on additional ways to make birds feel at home, such as water, nesting materials, and other eco-friendly habits. Concerned that natives may look untidy or messy? We’ll discuss some ways that a native plant landscape can look more formal and intentional. In the greater St. Louis area, we are very fortunate to have a number of organizations that support garden and bird enthusiasts, in terms of education and plants, so we’ll cover those as well. Register today to join us for our September Speaker Series event on September 14 at 6:00 PM.

We'll be joined by Dawn Weber, Vice President of the St. Louis Chapter of Wild Ones, an organization that builds communities that educate and encourage the use of native plants in the landscape for the benefit of wildlife and people. While not working at her job as an information technology data analyst, Dawn spends most of her time in her St. Louis city native garden habitat: studying, photographing, and enjoying all of the life that it supports. Her love for birds led her to native plants, but she's interested in everything! Her quarter-acre yard in St. Louis city is host to more species of wildlife than she can count. She is currently the vice present of the St. Louis Chapter of Wild Ones. The Wild Ones motto is "Healing the Earth, one yard at a time." Dawn enjoys sharing her yard and knowledge with others, to inspire them to take their first step toward healing their little piece of Earth.

Register for the September speaker series to join us on September 14 to learn how to bring color, plants, and bird songs into your life year-round by gardening with native plants for birds!
