Off-road vehicles on state park roads

Concerns about off-road utility vehicles on state park roads

Update: The Governor signed this bill.

A bill was passed by the Iowa House and Senate that would allow the operation of off-road utility vehicles on state park roads.  It is now awaiting the governor's veto or signature.  The Sierra Club is concerned about allowing off-road utility vehicles on state park roads.

  1. The temptation to go off-road is great.  Riding off-road can cause significant damage to plants, the terrain, and official hiking trails.  Dealing with a rider who goes off-road can be very difficult.  This is especially a problem given that the number of staff in the parks has been greatly reduced.  In a number of parks, the rangers do not live within the parks and would not be readily available to deal with the situation if someone is riding off-road.
  2. People who come to the state parks expect to be able to enjoy nature, plus the peace and quiet, without the noise that comes from off-road vehicles.
  3. Even if off-road vehicles are operated on the road, the noise from off-road vehicles can adversely impact wildlife.
