Campaign Teams Update

by Marya Hart

The hard work of our dedicated campaign teams is paying off. Many successes have been realized and more projects are in the queue.

 Zero Waste Task Force

  • Revised a proposed resolution to eliminate Minnesota government use of single-use plastic, which the chapter included in precinct caucus training sessions.

  • Will be presenting a class in March on reducing water use and preserving our water resources to 4th-8th graders at the Bdote Learning Center—a K-8 Dakota and Ojibwe language immersion program.

  • Is planning another collaboration with Augsburg University to host an environmental-related film.

Stop Line 3

  • Supported a winter story-telling event and feast that focused on clean water and wild rice on January 16th at the Bdote Learning Center. Petitions opposing Line 3 were also circulated and later delivered to Gov. Walz.

  • Will be collaborating with the Learning Center for its two-week "Intersession” by teaching a class on how to talk to legislators and taking a field trip to the Capitol with the students to deliver the petitions.

  • Helped South High honor students with a Stop Line 3 letter writing day, which resulted in twenty hand-written letters to key state leaders, including Gov. Walz.

  • Is preparing to launch a Mutual Aid Drive to collect gear and non-perishable food to support Indigenous communities on the front line of opposing Enbridge Line 3.

  • Is working to organize and train volunteer Line 3 monitors in the event that the project is approved.

Land Use and Transportation

  • Joined over a thousand groups across the country on Transit Equity Day—an event on February 4 combating climate change and transportation injustice. Participants took public transportation for their daily commutes and supporters gathered at Minneapolis City Hall to push for bus rapid transit implementation on I-94 in North Minneapolis.

  • Discussed a plan to convince the legislature to expand bus rapid transit and pass cleaner car standards with urgency.

  • Helped score a big win in St Paul, where the City Council voted to move forward with funding a bike and pedestrian path on Ayd Mill Road.
