Vote No on Question #1: Mayoral Control of City Hall

Sierra Club North Star Chapter Political Committee is proud to participate, along with TakeActionMN, OutFront MN, Our Revolution and FaithInMinnesota, in distributing this video series which documents a small sample of rampant excessive force by the Minneapolis Police Department.  This behavior, for which no one has been held accountable by Mayor Frey, is alarming in any democracy.

Increased use of police power to suppress peaceful dissent, as tragically evident at protests against the Enbridge Line 3 and Dakota Access pipelines, is a threat to the climate itself and climate justice for frontline communities.  We stand with peaceful protestors and for freedom of the press.

While some may support Amendment #1 for legitimate reasons, the massive influx of outside money to simultaneously re-elect Jacob Frey and concentrate inordinate power in his hands speaks to a larger agenda to slow down progressive policy.   These same donors and business interests backing “AllOfMpls” have opposed progressive and environmental policy reforms led by City Council Members including the minimum wage, paid sick leave, inclusionary zoning for sustainable housing, serious local action on the climate crisis and more.

Amendment #1 for Mayoral Control of City Hall is clearly a reaction against progressive success and, intended or not, constitutes a license for bullying and favoritism by the Mayor.  Under amendment #1, the Mayor would have the power to tell city staff to be more responsive to council allies and less responsive to Council Members the Mayor sees as opponents.  (More information on Amendment #1 available here.)

Sierra Club is proud to support Minneapolis candidates ready to pursue climate justice and aggressive municipal action on the climate crisis (sometimes called the municipal Green New Deal).  Needed actions like these should not be delayed or watered down to satisfy corporate donors.  There’s nothing “moderate” about taking less action to address an existential threat.
