Voters came out strongly for pro-environmental candidates and issues in Eastern Missouri in 2008. Of candidates endorsed by the Sierra Club, winners at the national level included President Barack Obama and U.S. Representatives William Lacy Clay and Russ Carnahan. At the statewide level, Jay Nixon coasted to victory in the governor's race. Meanwhile, Proposition C, the Clean Energy Initiative, passed with a heartening 66% of the vote.

In the state legislature, 21 representatives and one senator had been endorsed in the EMG region. Fifteen of these will be in office in 2009. Two of these victories, by Jeanne Kirkton and Vicki Lorenz Englund, represented Democratic pick-ups in their respective districts.

Here follows a list of legislators whom we anticipate will lead the effort in "greening" Missouri, protecting our communities and natural surroundings, and leading us toward a future of renewable energy and clean environment: T.D. El Amin (57th district); Jeannette Mott Oxford (59); Rachel Storch (64); Gina Walsh (69); Steve Brown (73); Michael Spreng (76); Margo McNeil (78); Jill Schupp (82); Jake Zimmerman (83); Vicki Lorenz Englund (85); Jeanne Kirkton (91); Sue Schoemehl (100); Tim Meadows (101); Jeff Roorda (102); and Belinda Harris (110). Your political committee is encouraged that we have such a fine group of legislators to join forces with legislators from around the state to work on the behalf of the environment.

The EMG Political Committee thanks all Sierra Club members who worked on campaigns and/or voted in favor of endorsed candidates and issues in 2008.
