The Wilderness Act was signed into law in 1964. We have started planning for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act in 2014. We invite you to get involved and be part of this celebration to acknowledge and applaud the landmark legislation.

Nationwide there are over 100 million acres protected as Wilderness. Wilderness designation is the strongest and most permanent protection that can be extended to our Federal public lands. For nearly 50 years volunteers in the Sierra Club have been successful in convincing Congress to create 8 Wilderness areas in Missouri. Wilderness areas include wild places in the Mark Twain National Forest and Mingo National Wildlife Refuge.

Join us to help plan our celebrations in Missouri. The celebrations could include hikes to the Missouri wilderness areas, public presentations, a general meeting, photography exhibits, articles in newspapers, etc. These events will be coordinated with the national Sierra Club, other interested environmental organizations, and the agencies that manage our Federal wilderness areas. If you have ideas or are interested in helping plan the our local celebration, please contact Toni Armstrong at 314-434-2072 or via email at toniarmstrong1@aol.com.
