In the run-up to the August 5 election, Sierra Club members from throughout Missouri campaigned for pro-environmental candidates and against two dangerous constitutional amendments.

Our hard work paid off with a resounding defeat of Amendment 7, which would have utilized a regressive sales tax primarily for highway expansion and maintenance, with little money for public transportation. On August 4, Sierrans Rich Egan, Mary Gross, Maris Berg, Steve Reed, Chloe Ames, Shawn Sheu and Ross Hunt campaigned against Amendment 7 at 6 Metrolink train stations.

In the St. Louis area, two Sierra Club endorsed candidates for State Representative won their primary races.

Unfortunately we were unable to defeat the misleading Amendment 1, which was designed to keep citizens and local governments from setting environmental and safety protections over factory farms. Despite the hard work of many Sierra Club members and others, the Amendment passed by a narrow margin. It will likely face a recount.

The Sierra Club Missouri Chapter provided support to all these campaigns through postcards, emails, facilitating press interviews and setting up phone banks and canvassing opportunities.

For the general election on Tuesday, November 4, in eastern Missouri the Sierra Club is working hard to elect candidates for State Senate and State Representative. To get involved in any of these campaigns, write to EMG Political Committee Chair Ross Hunt at rhunt711@gmail.com.

See the Missouri Chapter web site for the list of endorsements for local and national offices.
