About Us

The Sierra Club was founded in 1893 by the writer and naturalist John Muir. In the past century the Sierra Club has been a tireless voice for the thoughtful preservation of our natural heritage not only for our own well-being but for generations to come. The Orange-Chatham Group, one of several local groups in the North Carolina chapter, covers Alamance and Caswell counties in the eastern part of the Triad (e.g., Burlington, Yanceyville) as well as Chatham and Orange counties in the western part of the Triangle (e.g., Pittsboro, Chapel Hill).

Our mission statement

"To explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the earth; to practice and promote responsible use of the Earth's ecosystems and resources; to educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives."
