The Sierra Club is honored to present the 2025 Political Leadership Award to Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman for her strong record on the environment, especially regarding environmental justice and climate change.
In 2020, Councilmember Raman was elected to the LA City Council District 4. With a reconfigured District, she won reelection by an inspiring door to door campaign, in 2024.
Councilmember Raman has shown a clear understanding of the climate crisis as an actual crisis that requires ongoing collaborative action within and outside California no matter what is going on at the federal level. She has been a strong supporter of environmental justice. Among other things, Councilmember Raman has advocated for zero emission shipping at the Port of Los Angeles, supported city and state-wide transitions to all electric vehicles, co-sponsored a motion to develop a comprehensive regional wildlife habitat master plan, sponsored legislation to decarbonize City buildings and sponsored a resolution to support the designation of areas of the San Gabriel Mountains as a National Monument.
In 2022, Councilmember Raman was appointed by Mayor Garcetti to represent the City of Los Angeles on the South Coast Air Quality Management District governing board. Since her appointment, the Councilmember has been unrelenting in her efforts to obtain clean air for the residents of Los Angeles. Her latest effort was to vote in favor of SCAQMD Rules 1111 and 1121 requiring zero emission heat pumps.
