Most people don't realize it, but the fight against fossil fuels isn't just happening in our neighborhoods—it's taking place on the world stage as well.
Last month, Sierra Club members joined climate activists outside SoFi Stadium during the FIFA World Cup to protest FIFA's sponsorship agreement with Saudi Aramco, one of the world's largest oil companies. As reported in the Guardian, demonstrators called on FIFA to end its partnership with the fossil fuel giant, arguing that the world's most popular sporting event should not be used to promote an industry driving the climate crisis. The action, co-sponsored by Third Act SoCal, was part of a protest at World Cup and other arenas around the U.S., sending a clear message that greenwashing and sportswashing have no place in the future of sports.
At the same time, momentum continues to build much closer to home. Hundreds of South Los Angeles residents, including Sierra Club members, recently gathered at a community town hall and later packed a Los Angeles City hearing to demand the closure of the Murphy Drill Site. Neighbors shared stories of living for decades alongside oil operations and voiced concerns about air pollution, odors, and the health impacts of drilling in residential communities. Sierra Club's Clean Break team joined our partners in STAND-LA and local residents in urging City officials to revoke the permits that allow oil production to continue at the site.
These efforts reflect the same fundamental principle: communities deserve clean air, healthy neighborhoods, and a future free from fossil fuel pollution. Whether challenging corporate influence at an international sporting event or advocating for environmental justice in South Los Angeles, Sierra Club members are demonstrating that organized community action can make a difference.
Sierra Club's Clean Break team is proud to be part of this growing movement to end urban oil drilling and accelerate a just transition to clean energy. If you'd like to learn more, get involved, or help shape our next campaigns, please join us for our next Clean Break Team meeting on Thursday, August 13, at 7:00 p.m. Click HERE to RSVP. Together, we're building the momentum to protect our communities, hold polluters accountable, and create a healthier future for all. We hope to see you there!
